Creating a Sustainable Tomorrow

As concerns continue to grow over climate change and the negative effect humans are making on the planet, it is important to do what we can as individuals to make a difference.

When the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its landmark 2018 climate report, it found that the planet is warming more quickly than previously imagined – with the world forecasted to enter a state of crisis by 2040 through extreme drought and floods. Needless to say, the severe weather will devastate the country, and predictions show it is only getting worse. Since becoming more aware of the politics and the harsh realities of global warming in the last few years, I decided to switch up my lifestyle to lessen my own environmental impact in a variety of ways.

Whether it is through food, water conservation, electricity, transportation, or new innovative ideas, there are endless mediums to leave a positive mark on our planet. Something as simple as switching from single-use to reusable items, turning off and unplugging electronics when not in use, and being more conscious of water usage in homes or offices, can collectively make a difference. Veganism is one increasingly popular lifestyle that people have been adopting to improve food sustainability – myself included!

While the transition from a carnivorous diet to a plant-based one has been quite daunting, being more intentional about what you consume every day helps to generate a more environmentally conscious mindset. Going vegan isn’t only smart for the health advantages, but also combats the unnatural method of food production that occurs on a global scale to meet increasing demand.

To help me on my journey towards sustainability, I have been using an app called Earth Hero – which highlights how people’s everyday choices make changes in the world. It provides tips on topics like how to cut food waste and save energy in a very fun way! It makes the intimidating concept of climate change more digestible and gives clear examples of how we can help our planet – and ourselves – to be happier and healthier.
