Global Lessons: Blending American and Italian Business Practices

Diversity is a superpower for businesses as it brings together various perspectives, experiences, and talents to foster a deeper understanding of a broad customer base. We at PQE Group channel this power into everything we do and celebrate the uniqueness that gives us strength. Diversity is a fundamental component of our organization, and navigating the intricate web of cultural differences we experience across our global headquarters enables us to assist our clients better and integrate into local communities. This small business from Italy has now transformed into a Life Sciences leader and extended to far corners of the world – with many of our offices in America. This growth has highlighted the importance of multinationalism and helped us learn from our American colleagues, and vice versa, to learn the best methods and practices for success.

Navigating the differences between how Americans and Italians do business can be challenging, but the benefits far outweigh any obstacles. Although Life Sciences is catapulting towards change, many industry procedures are old-fashioned and desperately need revamping. The sector is putting a strong emphasis on quality as the FDA institutes regulatory changes and alterations. This is one of the vital moments when multiculturalism comes in handy, and we can learn from differing approaches to create the most effective way forward. A stark difference between American and Italian methods is that Italians have more of a laissez-faire approach to business while Americans employ a more strict set of rules and processes. This has benefited PQE Group tremendously in optimizing efficiency and avoiding waste to ensure fewer mistakes and a higher rate of planning and revenue.

American and Italian workplace cultures are demanding but rewarding. At PQE Group, we have benefited from more Americanized operating methods with stringent approaches to time management and productivity. American environments tend to emphasize direct communication, fast-paced decision-making, and a focus on individual achievement. On the other hand, Italian workspaces tend to prioritize relationship-building, subtle communication nuances, and a more relaxed approach to time. These disparities allow us to find a healthy balance that maximizes efficiency and cultivates an inclusive and comfortable collaborative team atmosphere. Especially as the FDA begins to work more closely and cooperatively with organizations to ensure the public receives the highest quality of products and services, we must streamline and refine efforts to reach our collective mission.

Regardless of background, embracing the opportunity to understand and respect differences strengthens cross-cultural relationships and opens doors to innovative ideas and enhanced teamwork. Our company has stricken a delicate balance between agility and clarity, showcasing the tangible benefits of this harmonious blend for our continued success. One of the most critical elements of attaining this was fostering a sense of collective achievement that transcends cultural boundaries. Once established, this helps build a more cohesive team to meet corporate and community-based goals. When everyone comes together to make things happen, it creates a special kind of magic.

I look forward to channeling this multicultural magic into the next big break for our global PQE Group team and community!
